Preoperative tumor markers and correlation of these markers with cyst size of ovarian mature cystic teratoma (dermoid cyst) in ovarian mature cystic teratoma cases

Özet Objective: To assess tumor markers (CA 125, CA 19-9, CA 15-3, CEA, AFP, β-HCG) and correlation of these markers with cyst size of ovarian mature cystic teratoma in ovarian mature cystic teratoma cases. Material and Methods: A total of 60 patients operated in Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics in Goztepe Education And Research Hospital for pelvic mass and histologically diagnosed as an ovarian mature cystic teratomas were assessed retrospectively for preoperative tumor markers and cyst size. Results: Sixty six ovarian masses were reported in a diameter range of 30-130 mm in 60 patients. Bilaterality rate was %10 and the mean age was 33,43. Tumor markers mean blood levels were as fallowing 64.44 U/mL for CA 19-9 (cut-off value <39); 21.55 U/mL for CA 125 (cut-off value <35); 10.78 U/mL for CA 15-3 (cut-off value <25); 1.91 ng/L for AFP (cut-off value <7); 1.80 ng/mL for CEA (cut-off value <3.4) and 0.38 mIU/Ml for β-HCG (cut-off value <2). Except for CA 19-9 none of the mean blood markers levels were above the cut-off value. %60 of the patients CA 19-9 levels were in normal range and the rest were above the cut-off value. Between these two groups mean tumor diameter was greater in high level of CA 19-9 group than the normal CA 19-9 level group and this was statistically significant. Bilaterality rate was insignificant. Conclusion: CA 19-9 is the only marker that's mean serum level above the cut-off value and highly correlated with mass diameter.
