Özet
This study examines the exile life of Refi’ Cevat Bey—one of the leading oppositional journal-ists of the Second Constitutional Period—between the years 1913 and 1918. Notably, follow-ing the assassination of Mahmut Şevket Pasha on June 11, 1913, Refi’ Cevat was exiled from Istanbul to Sinop and subsequently subjected to forced residence in Çorum and then Konya. Throughout this process, his experiences offer illuminating examples of the era’s overall at-mosphere as well as the relationship between the press and the opposition. The work draws upon archival documents, published sources, and personal memoirs to pro-vide insights into Refi’ Cevat’s exile. The findings underscore the breadth of the measures imposed on the oppositional press during the Committee of Union and Progress’s time in power. Furthermore, Refi’ Cevat’s exile experiences shed light on the political polarization in the late Ottoman period, the various measures taken against the opposition, and the inter-mittent restrictions placed on press freedom during that era.
