Özet Background: The aim of this study is to determine the toothpastes preferred by the patients who applied to the dentistry faculty and their state of consciousness in the choice of these toothpastes. Methods: This study included 500 volunteer individuals who applied to the restorative dental treatment department of two dental faculties. DMFT values of the patients were were recorded. Demographic information, which toothpastes used by individuals, information and opinions about fluoride in toothpastes, data on the status of informing patients about the risk of caries and questioning toothpastes by dentists were obtained from the questionnaire. Statistical analysis of the data was performed by applying Chi-Square test. Results: In both cities, 13% of all individuals used fluoride-free toothpaste, 72% in Istanbul and 86% in Konya did not use conscious toothpaste. The rate of conscious use of fluoride toothpaste is 33% of all patients in Istanbul and 28% of all patients in Konya. 40% of patients in Konya and 36% of patients in Istanbul think that fluoride-free pastes are more harmless. It was seen that the toothpastes used by the patients were questioned by dentist 20% in Konya, %25 in İstanbul and 40% of patients in Konya, 42% in Istanbul were informed about their susceptibility to caries by dentist. Conclusion: 13% of patients use flour-free toothpaste and 40% think that fluoride-free toothpaste is more harmless. Patients do not consciously choose toothpastes for fluoride. The rate of informing dentists to patients is less than 50%.
