Özet Objective: The aim of this study is to examine the views of patient relatives on brain death, and in parallel with this, their decisions on organ donation and cutting off life support from the patient. Materials and Methods: Socio-demographic characteristics such as age, gender, marital status, education level, and place of residence were recorded by scanning the archive records of the cases diagnosed with brain death between 2017 and 2019 in Selçuk University Medical Faculty Hospital. From the archive records, the behavior of the relatives of the patient, such as organ transplant permission, life support cut at the request of the family, spontaneous cardiac arrest expected, and cardiac arrest at the time of the declaration of brain death, were classified and the number of cases were recorded according to years. Results: A total of 60 brain death diagnoses were made as a result of an archive scan covering. The mean age of the patients was 31.12 (std; 24.7). The male gender is 37 (61.7%) and the female gender is 23 (38.3%), with a higher rate of males than females. Discontinuation of life support is the highest preference (40%) in patient relatives’ behaviors. This is followed by waiting for the heart to stop spontaneously (38.3%) and organ donation (18.3%). The most striking issue is that while the rate of those who decided to discontinue life support in 2017-2019 increased from 20 percent to 50 percent, organ donation decreased from 25 percent to 10 percent. No significant relationship was found in the Chi-square analysis of the variables with the behaviors of the relatives of the patients. Conclusion: The relatives of the patients are increasingly accepting brain death as a real death, but the fact that this situation is not reflected in the organ donation (transplant leave) is still an important problem.
