Investigation of the Relationship Between Individuals’ Authenticity, Self-Esteem, and Serious Leisure Perspectives of Individuals Participating in Leisure Activities

Özet
The aim of this study was to examine the relationships among authenticity, self-esteem, and serious leisure perspective of individuals participating in leisure activities. The sample of the study consisted of 295 leisure time participants, 197 females and 98 males, who attend KOMEK Public Education Center and Youth Center courses as a leisure time activity affiliated to Konya Metropolitan Municipality. While the demographic information form created by the researcher was used in obtaining the data in this study, Authenticity Scale, Two-Dimensional Self-Esteem Scale, and Serious Leisure Inventory were used in this study. Independent groups t test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were conducted to find out the differences of the participants’ authenticity, self-esteem, and serious leisure scores with regard to demographic variables. In adddition, Pearson’s Moments Multiplication Correlation Coefficients was calculated to examine the relarionships among authenticiy, self-esteem, and serious leisure perspective scores. As a result of the analyses, it was seen that there was a positive and moderately significant relationship between participants’ authenticity and self-esteem scores (r =,484, p =,000). While there was no significant relationship between serious leisure and authenticity scores (r = −,005, p =,937), there was a positive and low level significant relationship between self-esteem and serious leisure scores (r =,214, p =,000). The relationship between self-esteem and serious leisure perspectives of individuals who regularly participate in activities underlines how important it is for individuals to benefit from activity opportunities where they will gain serious leisure perspectives.
