Özet
Zirconia ceramics are increasingly used in dentistry due to their high aesthetic and mechanical properties and their biocompatibility. One of the important factors in the clinical success of restorations is the bond strength between ceramics, bonding agents and tooth structures. Adhesion is one of the necessary factors for a strong bond strength. Adhesion refers to the physicochemical adhesion of two dental materials and this concept is of great importance in dentistry. Adhesive systems are generally preferred for the cementation of zirconia restorations. Adhesive cementation provides the adhesion of the restoration to the dental tissues with chemical and micromechanical connection. With adhesive cementation, retention increases, marginal integrity is achieved, micro-leakage is reduced, the fracture resistance of the restoration is increased, and more successful and long-lasting restorations are obtained by preventing the risk of secondary caries. Surface treatments applied to silica-based ceramics are not suitable for zirconia ceramics, as chemically stable zirconia ceramics without silica content are acid-resistant. Therefore, there are problems in obtaining a reliable connection between zirconia ceramics and resin cements. Various surface treatment methods continue to be developed to improve the connection between zirconia ceramics and resin cements. Mechanical, chemical, or a combination of mechanical and chemical surface treatments can be applied to the ceramic surface to increase the bonding. Thanks to the surface treatments applied, the contact area on the material surface increases, the surface energy and wettability increase. In this article, surface treatments applied to increase the bond strength between resin cements and zirconia ceramics are discussed.
